Get Low

Really brain, how low can you get? Oh, Lil' Jon & The East Side Boyz low, I see. I blame EA for producing a great racing game called Need For Speed: Underground that featured "Get Low" which deftly stuck it deep in my psyche. Now, all it takes is a little reminder and I suddenly get the desire to wear a grill. Most recently, I was at a wedding and the DJ played "Get Low" and now I've been stuck with the song for about a week.

A Nightmare On Dexter Street

Looks like I'm having an in-brain mash-up. I recently started on the fourth season of Dexter (an excellent Showtime show), so the theme has been hanging out in my head in anticipation of watching the next episode. Just a little bit ago I was reminded of the film Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which started the A Nightmare On Elm Street theme crawling through my brain. But Dexter is too powerful, and has infiltrated the music. If I had any musical editing talent, I'd find a way to actually make this mash-up, because it's awesome.

No Diggity

Well, hello there. No not you. I mean you: Mid 90's RnB. I see you're back, and just as catchy as the first time around. You, with your timely urban slang. That's right, I've got Blackstreet's "No Diggity" funkin' in my brain box these days. Now, if I could just "bag it up", I'd be much happier. "No doubt."

Sex Packets

Ever have one of those albums you buy for one song, but then you end up enjoying so many of the others? I've found that to be the case with Digital Underground's Sex Packets album (came for "The Humpty Dance", stayed for the rest). Lots of great stuff in there, but today I'd like to talk about the title track: "Sex Packets." The boys over at Digital Underground apparently came up with a great fake product: sex packets. They're biochemically compacted sexual affection. Sex in a pill. And then they wrote multiple songs about this fake product. And then they put those songs in an album. And then I bought that album.

So today I've had the instrumental portions of the song looping over and over in my head. It's times like this that I really wish I knew more of the lyrics, so I could just get past the instrumentals. Looks like it's time to listen to it more...

Slick Black Cadillac

This past weekend was a great weekend for cars both in real life and in my head. I spent most of the weekend at the MSRA's annual Back to the 50's car show, looking at a lot of wonderful old cars. I also spent most of the weekend humming Quiet Riot's "Slick Black Cadillac" quietly to myself. But it's gone from a vaguely appropriate song for weekend fun, to officially wedged deep in my brain.

The only redeeming thing about all of this is that during the car show I got to ride in a real slick black Cadillac. It didn't have solid gold hubcaps though.

There's Always Someone Cooler Than You

Ever listened to a song and found it a little annoying? But then you found yourself humming the tune, so you listened to it again? Eventually you ended up liking it, despite it being sort of odd? Well, that's where I'm at with Ben Folds' song "There's Always Someone Cooler Than You." The music is great, but there's something off about the vocals that initially bugged me, but now they're what stand out to me as being a fun, defining feature.

As someone who grew up enjoying the quirkiness of artists like "Weird Al" Yankovic and They Might Be Giants, I've found that Ben Folds' style has a special place in my heart. I just wish his style was a a little more consistent; I find it difficult to find an album that really suits my tastes beyond a couple of tracks.

Sci-Fi Distortion

I'm not sure if it's the music I've been listening to, or what, but I haven't had any good fodder for The Phonological Loop for a long while. Admittedly I missed posting once a couple of months ago, but alas the music has left my head, and I feel it would be inappropriate to go back and fake a post. Perhaps that song will come back in the future for your enjoyment, but that's not what we're focusing on today.

Today I've been living with a short little instrumental loop from the song "Sci-Fi Distortion" by X-Treme Bass. Don't worry if you've never heard of this particular artist, it's pretty obscure. I happened upon this CD in a batch of promo discs that were given to me years ago by a family friend. Out of the roughly 30 CDs I received, I think I only kept about 4. On a side note, the best thing that came of it was introducing me to Propellerheads.

I'm not really minding the loop, but it'd be pretty cool if I could get a subwoofer installed in my brain. As the artist's name suggests, there's a good bit of bass in the tune and I feel like even my imagination isn't doing it justice.
